Deep Sea Fishing: The Best Tips and Techniques

Deep sea fishing can be a huge adventure for a fisherman.  Many of the greatest fishermen know that deep sea fishing is not as easy as it may appear.  This type of fishing may also be referred to as offshore fishing.  Deep sea fishing takes place in waters away from land that are 100 feet (30 meters) or deeper.  Popular places in the United States to deep sea fish include Texas, Alaska, Maine, Florida, and South Carolina.  Some of the types of fish often caught on deep sea fishing trips include tuna, dolphin, swordfish,  salmon, shark, haddock, mahi-mahi,  snapper, cobia, and striped bass.

The boats used for deep sea fishing are often larger then those used for other types of fishing.  These boats should be made to withstand harsh weather and elements.  These boats can accommodate a few passengers up to many depending on the size of the boat.

Fishing License/Rules and Regulations

Before you head out to deep sea fish in any location, you will need to see about getting a fishing license.  Your local wildlife commission will be able to assist you in this matter.  You will also want to find out if there is a limit on the number of fish that can be caught on one trip.  Local authorities may require a log to be kept of the number of fish caught. There may also be a size limit on fish, so it is best to check the local region to be sure.  There could be penalties for any rules and regulations that are not followed.Deep Sea Fishing

Once you have the date set for your fishing excursion, you will want to keep an eye on the weather forecast.  A gorgeous day will yield far better results then a day that has bad weather, such as rough winds and a hard rain.  It is also advised to keep up with the tide schedule.

Dress for the weather as well.  It is advised to dress in layers, as you can always peel a layer off.   The clothes should be comfortable. Realize that you will most likely get dirty, so do not wear clothes that can not be easily laundered.  Rubber soled shoes are also the best footwear to wear.  The rubber will prevent slips on the boat.

Time of Day

Time is also of the essence when you are taking a deep sea fishing trip.  Consider planning your trip at sunrise or sunset in order to catch more fish.  When the moon rises or sets, small fish and crustaceans come more alive with movement, which will stimulate other fish to prey after them, making them more active as well.   It has been said that the best time to fish are two hours before sunrise or 2 hours after sunset.

One of the biggest things any fisherman will tell you is safety is of the utmost concern.  No matter where you are deep sea fishing, if the waves are rough, one must make sure the boat is big enough to handle this. It is recommended that the boat be from 35 to 40 feet long.  You will also want to make sure that there is plenty of room for your catch if you do indeed plan on catching large fish.   If you are a novice with deep sea fishing, it is imperative that you take a more experienced fisherman with you.  This fisherman will be able to give good tips on where the best places to fish are, as well as point you in the right direction for becoming an expert yourself.   It is also an excellent idea to know the area that you are fishing in.  Safety should be a top priority, so familiarizing yourself with the area will not only help keep you safe, but possibly help you land more fish!

A prepared fisherman is always safer then those not prepared.  A life jacket, flares, and a radio are a must to be safe.

Fishing Locations

A top tip that many fishermen will often say is to fish near a reef.  These reefs often are filled with small fish, which may not seem that great to the person fishing, but these small fish draw large breeds of fish to them at feeding time!  This can mean a great catch to a fisher who is on top of his game.

Wrecks and rocks have also proven to be great places for fish to hide from strong currents.

Take notice of any sea gulls flying around.  These birds like to prey on small fish, and often know the best spots.  While you may not be interested in the small fish, lurking below these fish are often larger prey.

If you fancy catching tuna, you will want to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins.  Tuna fish will often swim beside dolphins.

Tying a Knot

Any pro deep sea fisher will tell you that you must know how to tie a knot before you head out on the waters.  Knowing how to accurately tie a knot can be the difference in you keeping a fish or the fish getting away.

When it comes to bait for deep sea fishing, either live or artificial bait can be used.  This will depend primarily on which type of fish is sought after.  Bait that is often used in the ocean include squid, minnows, and cut up fish.

Hello! I will say that sunrise is one of the best times to catch a fish. Or at least that has proven true for me. I have never had much luck with any other time of day. I usually am one of the first ones out on the water when I do sunrise fishing!
